Congressman Chuck Fleischmann Participates in Dedication with X-energy and ORNL Leadership
X-energy hosted a ceremony to dedicate its TRISO-X Fuel Fabrication Pilot Line located at the Department of Energy’s (DOE) Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). The ceremony was attended by X-energy and ORNL leadership and included remarks from Congressman Chuck Fleischmann (R-TN, District 3).
“The development and production of fuel is an essential step to the deployment of advanced nuclear reactors. These reactors have the potential to solve many of our greatest energy challenges, and I am proud to be an advocate for advanced nuclear and the American nuclear industry as a whole,” stated Congressman Fleischmann as part of his remarks. “This pilot facility is a partnership between DOE and X-energy, capitalizing on taxpayer funded investment in this incredible technology, which X-energy is helping to move to market.”
“Advanced nuclear reactors are the future of nuclear power and X-energy’s objective is to be the leading TRISO fuel fabricator in the U.S. and globally,” said X-energy’s Chief Executive Officer J. Clay Sell. “This ceremony is a culmination of the incredible progress the X-energy team has made with ORNL under our U.S. Department of Energy Cooperative Agreement toward fuel fabrication research, manufacturing process design, and installation of full-scale equipment on our path towards a U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission licensed commercial facility in the U.S.”
“The availability of high-assay low-enriched uranium (HALEU) fuel and a U.S.-based production line for HALEU-based fuel forms are critical elements for advanced reactor deployment. Our next stage is to complete the commercial TRISO-X fuel fabrication facility, which will produce fuel for these advanced reactors – serving commercial, government and U.S. Department of Defense applications,” Sell continued. “This TRISO-X Pilot Line enables X-energy to manufacture TRISO fuel forms using HALEU and is preparing to produce fuel that will begin qualification irradiation testing by early 2020. We are confident our work will help ensure the U.S. wins the global nuclear technology race.”
X-energy’s Cooperative Agreement, supported by DOE’s Office of Nuclear Energy, leverages DOE’s sustained investment in TRISO-coated particle fuel research and development that has laid the groundwork for commercial deployment.
X-energy is an advanced nuclear reactor design and TRISO-based fuel fabrication company. Our high temperature gas-cooled pebble bed reactors require less time to construct, use factory-produced components, cannot melt down, and are “walk-away” safe without operator intervention.
In concert with our reactor designs, X-energy is actively producing TRISO-based fuel forms and is implementing pilot scale manufacturing capacities. Tristructural Isotropic (TRISO) coated fuels are unique in their multi-layer encapsulation of uranium, leading to increased safety and proliferation resistance while employing functional containment.
