The Lead Design Engineer is responsible for the development of a Reactor System through a comprehensive, iterative technical management process that includes translating requirements into a configured system, integrating the technical inputs of the entire design team, managing interfaces, characterizing and managing technical risks, and verifying that the Reactor design meets all its operational needs.


  • Responsible for the complete development of a Reactor System that satisfies all top level, regulatory and user requirements
  • Responsible for the Systems Engineering Process tasks such as:
    • Analysis, development and documentation and maintenance of requirements
    • Analysis and allocation of functions to physical entities, documentation and maintenance of functional descriptions
    • Performs design synthesis
    • Verification of design against requirements
  • Responsible for System Analysis and Control tasks such as:
    • Development and maintenance of the Work Breakdown Structure of the Reactor System
    • The Configuration Management of the Reactor System
    • Schedule, execute and document technical reviews
    • Identify and perform trade studies as required
    • Manage and mitigate risks
  • Responsible for planning, organization and managing tasks such as :
    • Systems Engineering Planning
    • Organizing and Integrating System Development
    • Progress tracking and reporting
    • Interface with design and analysis engineers for system performance development baselines
    • Work in accordance with a NQA-1 Quality Assurance Program


  • Good understanding and proven experience in System Engineering principles as defined by INCOSE
  • Technical management skills and the ability to effectively manage and coordinate relevant interfaces between systems, projects and departments
  • Good understanding of licensing, regulatory, quality, and safety requirements for nuclear reactor
  • Good leadership skills including effective management skills (plannings, coordinating, directing)
  • Professional presentation skills and strong communication skills
  • Ability to motivate and inspire an assigned workforce
  • Good analytical and organizational problem-solving skills combined with lateral thinking skills
  • Ability to recognize risks/opportunities immediately, quantify impacts and recommend appropriate solutions
  • Decisive decision maker regarding conflicting technical issues and requirements
  • Able to be independent, objective and impartial
  • Attention to detail and ability to “think on their feet”

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen
  • Must be eligible to apply for and possess a U.S. security clearance with either the Dept. of Defense or the Dept. of Energy
  • At least seven years of professional experience in performing systems engineering, design,analysis, development, research, testing, and Validation & Verification activities
  • BS Mechanical, Electrical, or Materials engineering, Physics, or similar; MS highly desired
  • Experience in the nuclear power field
  • Experience in working under NQA-1 quality assurance program

Minimum Experience/Knowledge

  • Demonstrated Systems Engineering experience in a successful major nuclear system development projects (preferred) or other complex system
  • Strong familiarity with Systems Engineering requirements, tracking and management tools like CORE, DOORS, etc.
  • Experience in system delivery and successful commissioning of a nuclear system or any other power system
  • Able to effectively communicate results and analytical findings verbally and in writing.
